Last week the family of a 51-year-old woman came forward to the media with claims that a medical practitioner had sexually assaulted the woman when she went to undergo a medical procedure.
The family of the alleged victim identified the man in question as a “radiologist” but earlier this week on Timothy Poleon’s NewSpin program a caller who identified himself as a medical doctor said he wished to ‘clear the name of the medical fraternity,’ as there was a huge difference between a radiologist and a radiographer. The police also told the STAR this week that the accused in the case being investigated was not a radiologist.
Said the NewsSpin caller: “A radiologist is a medical doctor and the article clearly states that the person who engaged or allegedly engaged in this act was a doctor,” he started. “To be a radiologist you need a medical degree whereas a radiographer does not. The individual in question is not a doctor, and as such I need to clear the name of the medical fraternity.”
Online definitions of the terms state: ‘A radiologist is a doctor who specializes in the interpretation of medical images such as MR scans, CT scans, radiographs, nuclear medicine scans, mammograms and sonograms,’ while a radiographer was defined as ‘someone who worked with radiography, a member of the healthcare team who took X-rays and scans.’ Radiology can be used to create medical images of the human anatomy to help radiologists and other doctors diagnose and treat illness and injury.
The names in the story were changed for the protection of the family, and neither the name nor place of work of the man in question was mentioned in the STAR story carried on Saturday August 28. At this point the family says they don’t know the status of their case and the police told the STAR the suspect was questioned and then released pending further investigation.
A family member expressed: “There’s a lot going on right now. It’s in the DPP’s hands now. We’re going to a lawyer early next week.”
